‘END OF LEAGUE’ Salvini’s right-wing party in TURMOIL over £44 MILLION fraud bill
ITALIAN interior minister Matteo Salvini could be forced to change the name of his right-wing League party to avoid an eye-watering £44million (€49million) fraud bill. A judge in Genoa has ordered the seizure of the colossal sum from Mr Salvini’s League party following a conspiracy relating to electoral reimbursements between 2008 and 2010.
The scandal is the biggest in the history of the party, which along with Luigi di Maio’s populist Five Star Movement governs Italy under a coalition.
League now risks filing for bankruptcy and could even cease to exist unless Mr Salvini changes its name.The shock news came from an investigation that was launched in 2017, which led to the conviction of the party’s founder Umberto Bossi, and other League members including its treasurer Francesco Belsito.......Alternative names for the party put forward by League officials include “Italians First”, which is Mr Salvini’s favourite slogan, as well as “National League” or “League for Salvini”.
